BACKGROUND

Access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity is essential for fostering industrialization and driving meaningful economic development.

THE CHALLENGE

“Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is home to roughly 1 billion people, yet it generates about the same amount of electricity as Spain, which has a population of just 45 million” - KPMG.

Additionally, SSA is marked by outdated, centralized power systems that struggle to meet current energy needs. Securing funding for the capital expenditures needed to replace or upgrade these facilities, along with the high operational and maintenance costs, poses a significant obstacle. This situation limits efforts to extend electricity access to the wider population beyond current levels.

Countries in the SADC region are grappling with serious energy shortages, with key players like South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe facing daily rolling blackouts that last anywhere from 4 to 12 hours.

THE SOLUTION

In response to these challenges, there has been a surge of activity from independent power producers (IPPs), who are stepping in to support existing centralized grids with privately developed power plants and off-grid solutions, easing the burden on the grid and facilitating new electricity connections.

Serenje and its partners are committed to bridging the gaps in energy production and supply throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.

Our vision is to build on our current initiatives by creating a diverse portfolio of projects that extend from South Africa to the wider SSA region.

At Serenje, we aim to collaborate with local developers, operators, and IPPs to enhance the energy mix while addressing the needs of both industrial and residential customers.

Our business model provides comprehensive clean energy solutions. We work with our partners to secure financing for power projects, delivering a complete turnkey solution.
